Training Overview

How free should speech be on your campus?

In September, a Florida university agreed to pay a settlement and discontinue its bias response team, which students claimed punished them for expressing their opinions. This lawsuit is one example of the ongoing reconciliation between free speech and campus climate that colleges and universities face this academic year.

You need to know the foundation of the First Amendment and discover its most recent interpretation for higher education campuses through regulations and case law. To prepare for possible changes ahead, you should review and update policies and procedures at your institution.

Even private colleges and universities, while not directly subject to the First Amendment, must face student and faculty free-speech demands. State constitutions and statutes, court opinions, advocacy organizations like the ACLU and FIRE, as well as commitments in student and faculty handbooks, are all potential sources of free speech and academic freedom, that private institutions ignore at their peril.

The Students’ First Amendment Rights Certification program will enable you to:

  • Recognize and protect free speech on your campus
  • Update your knowledge to reflect the latest regulations and case law
  • Protect your institution from potential legal liability
  • Prove your expertise to colleagues, students, and regulators
